Looking for some motivation to keep you active this winter?

As the colder weather draws nearer and the days get shorter it’s hard to stay motivated to keep active. Let’s face it, we would much rather snuggle up in front of a cosy fire with a good book and a hot chocolate.

Sean Williams, Subject Officer for PE, has put together some do’s and don’ts on how to kick yourself back into action and beat those winter blues.

Do
set goals

Goals are a fantastic way to stay motivated - just make sure they’re achievable! Take it slow at first. Remember that anything is better than nothing. Just 30 minutes of walking can strengthen bones, reduce body fat, and boost muscle power and endurance.

¶Ù´Ç²Ô’t dread your work out

Having a negative attitude will make the workout 10 times harder. Try and be positive and keep reminding yourself of your goal - you’ll thank yourself afterwards!

Do create a playlist

Not only will listening to your favourite music make exercise more fun, but it will also lock you into a rhythm, reducing your perception of how difficult the workout is.

¶Ù´Ç²Ô’t press snooze

When the alarm goes off, get up and go! The longer you sit and think about exercising, the less likely you are to do it.

Do put your activewear on the radiator

Having your clothes toasty warm and ready to go will help you brace those cold and bitter mornings/evenings.

¶Ù´Ç²Ô’t be afraid to mix it up

Doing the same thing, again and again, can get old fast. Trying different things will not only boost enthusiasm and motivation but will work different muscles, giving you a more effective session.

Do dress the part

As the saying goes, there’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing choices. Check the weather forecast beforehand. Think light layers! You want to set out nice and warm but be able to remove items of clothing if needed.
